The way people play and interact with games on Facebook is changing with the latest implementation of Facebook Credits, says Sony Ericsson, but not all users want to spend money on online games. Free, quick and simple games are still available, like Emusicon internet pinball, for those casual gamers who do not want to invest time and money.
Role-playing games such as Farmville and action games such as Mafia Wars are utilising these credits to enhance players’ experiences. Credits for these games were previously earned by unlocking different levels, but now the developers are monetising the games so users are required to use real cash to buy virtual goods.
There are over 140 games applications within Facebook that accept Facebook Credits. The currency allows players to buy special items that enable them to move ahead within the game more quickly. Facebook Credits also allow users to buy points to play specific games, buy avatars, food, pets and even virtual homes within games.
With over 500 million users on Facebook, half of those users play games on Facebook every month. According to the market research firm NPD Group, 20% of the whole American population has played, or are actively playing social games, within the past 3 months. 35% of those people were first-time gamers. Approximately 10% spend real money to improve their social gaming experience by buying virtual pets or weapons.
However, not everyone is going to want to part with hard earned cash, just to participate in social gaming. There are still games on Facebook that are still free to all users. Sony Ericsson developed this computer pinball game as part of their global page to give fans an additional element of fun when visiting the brand on Facebook.
